Then we give our skis a thought or two. But, what are our options? Generally speaking, the skis on your snowmobile are designed to match the habits and usage the sled maker expects of the average rider. Heck, the same ski Yamaha used on its top of the line Enticer series was identical to the one used on its low buck SnoScoot. The main criteria were cost, basic function and durability. When independent front suspensions — be they trailing arm, A-arm or struts — came on the snowmobile scene, the game changed.
To a less severe extent, this darting phenomenon began appearing on trail sleds. Even today, some snowmobiles exhibit various degrees of darting due to specific trail conditions. But ski performance does enter the picture. Other considerations include the type of wearbars you have on your sled. Some aftermarket wearbars come with a flat, tongue-like design that seems to be effective.
You can use less aggressive wearbars with reduced carbide length. For more than a decade, Yamaha has worked with various aftermarket snowmobile parts suppliers to create plastic skis that enhance the front end performance of its 4-stroke sleds. One of those suppliers, Ultimate Sports Inc.
USI takes ski design very seriously, breaking the ski down into several component parts. A high-performance rider wants different characteristics than a touring rider, but they both want maximum performance for dollars spent. Metheny and USI have been creating snowmobile skis since the late s. This design is said to give the ski superior snow penetration, which means it will bite better than a stock ski for aggressive turn-ins.
Even so, the design provides easy steering with minimal darting effect. The aggressive sport rider will want to check the X2 Triple Threat design with interchangeable fin design. There are a variety of front keel fins that can be matched to a selection of tail fins to make the ski respond better in turns, perform better in loose snow and reduce ski to snow friction for enhanced top end speeds.
USI claims up to a four mile per hour gain in speed versus its own earlier ski designs. The USI ski models not only provide an upgrade in performance, but can be color-matched to give your sled a custom look.

Add fluid as required. Fuel quality: Inspect the fuel system to verify fuel quality and proper operation. For maximum performance, Polaris recommends the use of 91 octane or higher fuel, with no ethanol, inand engines.
Do not use lower than 87 octane fuel. Do not use oxygenated fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol. Never use E85 or 88 E15 fuel in your snowmobile.
Snowmobiles with engines are designed to run on 87 octane non-oxygenated or 89 octane oxygenated pump gasoline. There's a great deal of variability in the quality of 87 octane gasoline available across the country, so Polaris encourages the use of premium fuel when possible. Do not use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol including E Using fuels with a lower than recommended octane or operating with obstructed fuel systems will result in serious and costly engine damage.
Always use the recommended fuel for your machine. Perform maintenance as recommended. Prolonged exposure to petroleum-based products may damage paint.
Always protect painted surfaces when handling fuel. Track tension: Ensure your track tension and track alignment are adjusted and set to specification. If the track is studded, the track tension must be set to specification and inspected more frequently.
Tech Tip: Snowmobile Exhaust 101
This will ensure maximum performance and optimize track and rail slider wear. Rail slider condition: Inspect your rail sliders for excessive or uneven wear. Replace them when worn to the indicator. This will ensure you start the season with rail sliders in good condition and with even wear.
Rails: Check for bends that occur as a result of hard landings. Inspect and re-torque fasteners, mounting bolts and idler bolts. This ensures you start the season with rails that are straight and in good condition. Brake disc and brake pads: Inspect your brake disc for signs of material or discoloration that could indicate the brake is dragging. Inspect your brake pads and replace them if required. This ensures you start the season with a brake system in good working order. Cooling system: Check the coolant level, radiator cap and coolant hoses to ensure the cooling system works properly.

The chaincase acts as a speed reducer and even Arctic's planetary box performs the same duty. Matching the engine speed to the vehicle speed is unfortunately a necessary evil that comes with the use of the internal combustion engine. The power from a piston engine increases with engine speed, and is maximized across perhaps one-quarter of the total rpm band.
To most effectively use the available power, it's therefore desirable to keep the engine working within its optimal power band. Cars and motorcycles accomplish this by using gear boxes coupled with final drive reductions like differentials and rear wheel sprocket ratios. Snowmobile gearing Snowmobiles have automatic CVT belt drive transmissions, and the chaincase acts as the final drive reduction.
Snowmobile belt drive transmissions usually operate with a low ratio and shift out to a. This gives an overall ratio change, which is fairly broad, as most cars and motorcycles have a spread of around between its lowest and highest gearbox ratio. With most snowmobile engines now operating around 8, rpm with 8- to inch drivers, you need a reduction ratio of between 1.
If you did not have this reduction ratio, but just mounted the secondary directly on the drive shaft, you would actually be geared for a top speed of mph when your belt drive reached a ratio at 8, rpm and used 8-inch drivers.
If you'd throw in some larger inch drivers instead, you're looking at a top speed of mph. This is totally impractical, because in the last case you would not even start shifting out of low ratio until you reached 82 mph.
If you wanted to have a top speed of mph, with the secondary mounted directly on the driveshaft and using 8-inch drivers, the engine would have to produce maximum power at 4, rpm, which is only around where most clutches engage the belt these days. The few attempts made to have a direct drive system ended up with very small drive sprockets and low revving engines, and these vehicles were eventually abandoned in favor of gear reduction in the form of a chaincase or planetary gear system.
If you fancy yourself an engineer, here are the formulas that give you the answers. Peak RPM changes - Modifying an engine and moving the power peak from 8, rpm A to 9, rpm B has the same effect as gearing taller.

The 5 hp gain through the entire power band is not real noticeable by the seat of the pants but if you would take 2 identical sleds and run them side by side one with the Maxximum exhaust and the other with stock, the Maxximum exhaust sled will just nudge ahead of the pack.
The only down fall of this product is the deeper sound at wide open throttle that will take time to get use to. Also the workmanship on the gasket ends and the tweaking we had to do to get the exhaust tips lined up is less then desirable but all in all a great product.
Remove exhaust end caps, taillight screws and cover and right side tank cover as noted by arrows at Pic 1. Pic 2 Remove the nuts from the seat hold down j-bolts. Pic 3 Lift up gently and pull seat to the rear of the sled to un hook it from under the fuel tank. Pic 2. Pic 3. Pic 4. Pic 5. Drain the fuel from the tank, remove the left side cover, disconnect the fuel level sender and both hoses from the fuel tank. Remove upper tank screws and mounting nuts.
Lift rear of the tank and slide it out to access the tank vent. Remove the fuel tank. Alternate 2: Remove both side cover screws at the base of the tank, 4 main tank cover screws Blue Portion and the 2 nuts that hold down the tank.
Remove gas cap and tilt the tank enough to pull the fill area through the cover to pop off the fill rubber donut. Pic 6. Remove the exhaust pipe black side covers from the tunnel and heat shield from the stock silencer.
Next remove the 4 muffler bolts that hold it to the rear of the tunnel. With the tank removed or propped remove the 2 rubber pugs from the tunnel. These will gain you access to the exhaust clamps Pic 6. Loosen exhaust clamps with 12 mm ratchet Pic 5. Remove muffler by pulling towards the rear of the sled. NOTE: Due to limited area, it is a very tight fit between the exhaust pipe, top of the tunnel and the rear section of the chassis.
Some force may be required to remove the muffler assembly. Stock Exhaust. Pic 8. Pic 9. Now that the stock exhaust is out you will want to either have new exhaust gaskets purchased for this install or reuse the stock gaskets.
To remove the stock gaskets use a hook device as shown in Pic 8 and slowly pull the gaskets from behind through the pipe. It is a extremely snug fit so please take your time. Note: Parts to save and set on the side are exhaust gaskets, exhasut clamps and the rear rubber bushings, spacers, washers and nuts. Before installing the stock exhaust gaskets onto the new stainless steel exhaust, take special notice to the notches in the stock exhaust and how the clamps fit onto that exhaust.
Pic 10 The new exhaust will need some modifications to the notches with a die grinder or side grinder to get the clamps to fill on properly. Pic Pic 12 4. To install the new stainless steel exhaust system, complete the installation in reverse paying special attention to the alignment of the exhaust pipes to the flex head pipe.
Slight expansion of crossover pipe at gasket area may be required to ease installation prior to installing the gasket.
